TO STRENGTHEN THE MUSCLES OF YOUR PELVIC FLOOR
Pelvic floor problems are generally very uncomfortable for those affected. Although rarely talked about, these conditions are not uncommon. In fact, urinary continence alone is estimated to affect one in ten men and one in three women* over the course of their lifetime. Incontinence and other perineal problems are major health concerns, which affect patients’ quality of life and ability to participate socially.
Luckily, there are simple solutions available. In fact, in most cases perineal and pelvic physical therapy is a very effective way to alleviate these uncomfortable problems! This approach to treating urinary incontinence is considered a primary method of treatment, with a 70% success rate. It’s a simple, minimally invasive solution that allows you to once again enjoy your favorite activities.
What are you waiting for?
Our physical therapists are trained and experienced in perineal and pelvic rehabilitation, and can help you with the following conditions:
- Urinary, stool, or gas incontinence
- Pelvic prolapse (organ descent)
- Increased frequency of urination
- Post-partum (pregnancy) rehabilitation
- Pre- and post-prostatectomy
- Constipation, bloating
- Sexual pain
- Chronic pain in the pelvis, abdomen, or different pelvic organs
- Neurological conditions: pudendal neuropathy, cauda equina syndrome, etc.
The physical therapy treatment will include an initial evaluation and follow-up visits depending on what is needed to reach your objectives. The physical therapist will help you improve any lifestyle habits related to these problems, and guide you in performing appropriate exercises. If needed, internal or external manual therapy techniques, bio-feedback, and electrical stimulation may also be used.
For more details, feel free to reach out to one of our perineal and pelvic rehabilitation experts.
Plan to arrive a few minutes early to fill out the health form, which includes various items that may affect your pelvic health, such as medical history and pregnancy and delivery history, if applicable.
You can wear comfortable clothes. When it’s hot outside, wearing a dress or skirt can facilitate the treatment. We will provide appropriate clothing if necessary.
The meeting is divided into 3 parts:
- An interview where you will be asked about different aspects of your pelvic health: urinary, bowel and sexual habits as well as your symptoms.
- A physical examination that may include a musculoskeletal examination of the back-pelvis-hip, abdomen and a gynecological examination (vaginal and/or rectal exam). Your physiotherapist will explain the type of examination chosen for your condition and the reasons for this choice. Please be aware that your consent will be required and respected at all times to proceed with the examination. It is also possible to do the internal examination during a subsequent meeting.
- A teaching section with exercises and advice adapted to your condition in order to solve the problem for which you are consulting.
Although the exam can be quite intimidating, our therapists are equipped to put you at ease and respect your privacy. In addition, our treatment rooms are comfortable, private and well soundproofed.
